What I learned in 2016

2016 has been a rollercoaster for Josy and I, a thrill ride of emotions. This year really tested our entrepreneurial backbone. We always hear about the success stories in the magazines but I think it is important to shed light on the hardships to really appreciate how a company became successful. January 2016, I had recently sold my gym business of 3 years to focus on Paleo Bakehouse with Josy full time. At that time, Paleo Bakehouse was barely making money to cover the rent let alone, pay ourselves. Though I was confident we were going to succeed, we both couldn't help but to feel a little anxiety, worry and fear walking into PBH every single day. What kept us going was the fact that we knew we had something special, we had our audience and most importantly, we had each other.

We dabbled in everything: Farmers markets, wholesale, online, catering, you name it, we tried it. Being presented with so many opportunities may seem great at first, but we were never really focused on a common goal, which created huge problems for the company. When you half ass everything, you are left with a half assed business. One day, defeated after 8 hours working a farmers market, Josy and I sat down and had "the talk" to discuss the future of Paleo Bakehouse.

We wanted to be in charge of our own destiny, we wanted to control the customer experience, we wanted to be in charge of what products we can release, and when. On April 18th, 2016 Josy and I did just that and decided to launch the Paleo Bakehouse Box. The premise was simple: Every single month Josy and I would freshly bake a box of delicious treats for our subscribers and allow them to purchase more with a special discount code. If this didn't work, we would have to shut the bakery doors. It had to work. This was our baby of 5 years. We sent out the initial interest email and boy, did we have interest!

The response was astounding! Hundreds of people are now subscribed to the PBH box and it is only growing! We grew our 2 person operation to a 6 person team! We are so thankful to have Sam, Dominique, Melanie and Chris on our team! 

We released over 30 new products, developed different packages and released limited edition items as well. We are a completely different company with the same values:

2017 is going to an even bigger year for PBH! Here is a list of plans we have for 2017:

  • Grow our subscriber capacity to 600 (100 more from 2016)
  • Create a "Custom Box" option for those who want to create their own PBH Box and make it a truly personal experience.
  • We are going to create special subscriptions for Families and Offices who love PBH.
  • Faster communication with our customers to ensure all questions, comments and concerns are addressed as quickly as possible.
  • Faster shipping of products to ensure you don't have to wait a week for your goodies. 
  • Free Shipping: Just another way to reinvest in our customers. As I type this, we are figuring out the fairest way to offer free shipping.
  • Limited releases and collaborations with the brightest minds and personalities in the Paleo-sphere.

 

 

Thank you to all of our family and friends who sacrificed your weekends and nights to help Josy and I build orders. 2016 wouldn't have been the same without you! Thank you to all our customers for allowing Josy and I the opportunity to get up every morning and do what we love. Finally, I want to thank the love of my life and business partner Josy for always being my wife first and boss second. :)
