Keto Diet: What is it?

Hey there! Welcome to the PBH Foods blog! I love coming up with new ways to communicate with our customers, so here I’ll be giving you all of the PBH happenings and share some amazing highlights of our customers! Since we started introducing more keto desserts to our line up we have been getting a lot of questions regarding exactly what keto is. Sure, there are several articles on what keto is, but we figured we had to answer this ourself. After receiving so many questions about this topic, I think the best way to start this blog is to address a question I get asked EVERY SINGLE DAY!

What is keto?

I’m glad you asked. The Keto diet is a bit more than just a simple diet. The Keto diet consists of consuming high fat while keeping your carb intake low in order to push your body into a process called Ketosis. What is ketosis? Ketosis is when fats in your body are burned instead of the traditional carbs your body would use for energy. When you are doing the keto diet you should test ketones in your body by buying ketones test strips. This will ensure that you are following the keto guidelines and actually putting your body into ketosis. Keto has been linked to many health benefits and something that our audience has been requesting more of over and over.

Top keto highlights:

Some of our favorite keto highlights include:

  • Leads to more weight loss!
  • Yes, being on the keto diet will allow your body to lose weight. I know this first hand. Without really trying your body will start dropping weight. You are consuming less carbs and no sugar so your body will naturally start dropping weight.
  • Controls your blood sugar and keeps it low! (Also great for insulin levels).
  • Improves energy levels and sleep. Easier to get out the door in the mornings!
  • It helps improve your metabolism to decrease the amount of time you’re hungry throughout the day!

What can I eat on the keto diet?

On a keto diet you can consume foods high in fat. Your meals will be 70%-80% fat, 20% protein and 5% carbs. The keto diet is often times confused with the atkins diet but it is not to be confused with the atkins diet. Eating keto your body goes through several changes. Your metabolism speeds up, your hunger decreases, your muscle mass increases and your blood and heart disease risk profile improves. When you are on a keto diet you cannot consume sugars so the idea of having our desserts sounds impossible right? Well, that is where we had to get creative and source sugar free sugar options for our keto friendly desserts. We created our keto friendly desserts using sugar free sugars such as monk fruit, stevia, allulose and erythritol. We swapped our our honey and our coconut sugar for these sugar free natural sweeteners. We also kept the carbs low by using our traditional almond flour. The almond flour not only kept the carb count low on our desserts, but it provided our keto desserts a higher fat content.

What are other high in fats keto foods?

Some high in fat keto foods include

  • Avocados
  • Nuts
  • Flax seeds
  • Hemp hearts
  • Chia seeds
  • Olives
  • Cold-pressed olive oil,
  • Coconuts and unrefined coconut oil

Are there any side effects to doing the keto diet?

Just like with anything there is always a little bit of a side effect, but nothing that you cannot overcome. I know that when I first did keto I experienced a few of these symptoms, but making sure I drank plenty of water and time helped me overcome these side effects. They call these feelings the “keto flu.” The main reason you start to feel a little weird is because your body is going through withdrawls. Eliminating sugar and carbohydrates shocks your body especially if you have been consuming a lot of sugar and carbs. I tend to get a little irritable and I experience headaches. That typically only lasts me the first week. Here are some other possible temporary side effects:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Irritability
  • Constipation
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Nausea
  • Stomachache
  • Dizziness
  • Sugar cravings
  • Cramps
  • Sore muscles
  • Bad breath

Can I still eat your desserts on the keto diet?

With the keto diet wanted to make sure that all our keto desserts met the keto guidelines. We have been receiving an overwhelming amount of demand to begin expanding our Keto dessert line! With all the health benefits associated with the keto diet I can see why. We started our keto dessert line up with two offerings. Our yummy keto cinnamon donut and a keto lemon coconut cookie. The response to these two freshly baked yummy keto desserts was amazing. We had so many people rave about these two options that they kept asking for more options. Since then we expanded our keto dessert line up. We added 3 more keto donuts to our keto dessert line up. We have the keto double chocolate donuts, keto vanilla donuts, and even keto chocolate chip donuts. We also added two more keto cookies. The keto chocolate chip cookies and the keto fudge cookies. Each of these offerings adhere to the keto diet guidelines. They all contain low carbs, high fat and no sugar. They range from 1 net carbs to 5 net carbs.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read our first PBH blog! I hope this blog answers your question on what the keto diet really is and why we have chosen to create so many new keto desserts. I am so excited to share more informative blogs with you all!  Stay tuned for all the amazing keto and paleo blogs to come ! Welcome to the PBH Foods blog family.

I’ve tried other keto products with monk fruit and I felt it had a taste i really didn’t like… does it have a strong flavor or could it have been something else??? I’ve stayed away from everything else with monk fruit since… I normally use erythritol because I never can tell the difference from regular table sugar .I don’t want to give monk fruit a bad rap if it wasn’t that .. Thanks!!!
